Parents seeing red over ‘racist’ attacks that saw ginger-haired pupils assaulted

Police are investigating an assault at a Calgary Catholic school that resulted in 13 students being suspended — and potentially facing criminal charges.

A red-headed Grade 10 St. Francis student was swarmed and beaten by students at the northwest school Thursday, declared “Kick a Ginger Day” by the popular animated TV show South Park.

The unusual prank targeting red-headed students gained momentum through the social-networking website Facebook and resulted in a number of students in the district being bullied, Calgary Catholic School District spokeswoman Janet Sutherland said yesterday.

The assault at St. Francis was the only incident serious enough to warrant a police investigation, said Sutherland.

“We have a zero tolerance for violence in our schools,” she said.

Calgary police spokesman Kevin Brookwell said the assault at St. Francis could result in criminal charges against the students involved.

“People have to realize there are consequences for their actions,” he said.

School staff was notified about the incident immediately and the injured student’s parents were called.

He suffered minor bruising and didn’t require medical attention, said Sutherland.

The victim returned to school yesterday while the 13 suspended students were being interviewed by officers, she said.

At St. Alphonsus, four Grade 7 red-headed girls were repeatedly kicked by about a dozen girls and boys at the school. Mom Catherine Kelly said her 12-year-old daughter came home limping Thursday.

“It was Grade 8 and 9 students who were coming up and saying ‘it’s Kick a Ginger Day’ and just really wailing on them,” she said.

“Her legs are just so sore,” Kelly said. “And I’m sure today and tomorrow there’s going to be a lot of bruising on her legs.”

The shaken student said: “If it had been ‘Kick a Fat Kid’ or ‘Kick a Black Kid’, would you still have done it?”

Kelly said she’s appalled by the violence.

She wants the students involved to be expelled.

“It’s assault — it’s racist, too,” she said.

Sutherland said St. Alphonsus is investigating the incident and suspensions could be issued.

This story is a disgusting read first thing in the morning.

The kids who thought ‘Kick A Ginger Day’ was nothing but another prank are sick, and the schools involved need to adhere to the Zero Tolerance Policy and not just suspend the guilty parties but expel them.

“Ginger kids?” What on earth happened to just calling a redhead a redhead?

I’ve got a news flash for the “zero tolerance” crowd: There will always be bullies. Expelling them from one indoctrination center won’t make them into kinder, gentler souls.

Perhaps if we were not raising a generation of “progressive” children, none of this would be an issue. I would bet money that the school in question would suspend the “ginger” kids for knocking the bullies’ teeth in, right? Yep; that’s progress all right.

I come from a family of redheads, and this is the first time I have heard the term ‘ginger’ kids.

Unfortunately the ‘zero tolerance’ policy is the only control a school has over it’s students anymore. Schools can’t even hold students back a grade anymore because it would be detrimental to the students self esteem. Instead you have “assistance” classes. We are teaching our kids that hard work is no longer necessary….good behavior is an option, there will always be someone there to help push you along, and if you do screw up you are rewarded with a few days off of school.

It’s unfortunate, however there is only one effective way to deal with a bully and that’s for the person being bullied to knock the crap out of them. By not allowing that to happen and by failing to punish people who raise bullies all we do is produce more of the nasty trolls.

Of course a red head isn’t someone I’d chose to pick on..

I fully agree that the people spawning these bullies (or any degenerate in general) need to be held accountable. The Tanker of Love and I are parents and we know that we are responsible not just for our son’s actions, but for the person he turns out to be in life.

I wouldn’t pick on a red head either…very fiery those red heads!
